GOLDEN VALLEY AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH TRUST

Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust (GART) is a public-private sector partnership research institution, established in 1998 under the Land (Perpetual Succession) Act (CAP 288) of the Laws of Zambia. GART envisions becoming a centre of excellence in research and development for climate-smart agriculture in Zambia and beyond. Its strategic goal is to contribute to agricultural development through commercially oriented and farmer-focused research. GART conducts applied and adaptive research in climate-smart and sustainable agricultural systems, including agroforestry, conservation and regenerative agriculture, horticulture, orphaned and underutilised crops, smallholder livestock, and aquaculture. The institution also carries out contract research for companies and organisations, disseminates results through various technology dissemination platforms, and operates a commercial production unit to support income generation and institutional sustainability.

Advancing Agroforestry Research and Practical Impact

GART brings extensive expertise in agroforestry systems and sustainable agriculture research. In AfroGrow, GART contributes to socio-economic assessments of agroforestry practices and evaluates the role of animal health and agroforestry in food security and medicinal crop cultivation. The team also supports efforts to assess the scalability of agroforestry for climate neutrality and contributes to building traceability systems for better management and transparency. GART plays a key role in dissemination, outreach, and capacity-building activities, helping to translate research into real-world impact.
