WILDLIFE RESEARCH AND TRAINING INSTITUTE

The Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) is a state corporation in Kenya mandated with wildlife conservation and management. Headquartered in Naivasha, WRTI operates field centres and sub-centres across key wildlife conservation areas, each addressing specific agro-climatic research themes.

WRTI was established to coordinate and undertake wildlife research and training nationwide. Its functions include conducting all forms of wildlife research, addressing emerging conservation issues, and strengthening capacity in wildlife conservation and management through training. Additionally, WRTI is responsible for granting wildlife research permits and establishing a comprehensive wildlife database in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and other key agencies and stakeholders.

Bridging Wildlife Research with Agroforestry Innovation

WRTI joins AfroGrow as an associated partner and brings its ecological expertise to AfroGrow through collaboration with IRD and ICIPE. WRTI contributes to the development of community- and market-based databases of suitable plant and animal species, ensuring relevance to local livelihoods and ecosystems. It also supports the creation of regional suitability assessment maps, which guide optimal species selection for agroforestry systems across diverse African landscapes.
