The Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF)

The Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) harnesses the power of trees, forests and agroforestry landscapes, soils to address the most pressing global challenges of our time – biodiversity loss, climate change, food security, livelihoods and inequity. CIFOR-ICRAF is a non-profit science institution that generates and applies evidence to meet today’s most pressing challenges, including energy insecurity and the climate and biodiversity crises. Over a combined total of 70 years, we have built vast knowledge of forests and trees outside of forests in agricultural landscapes (agroforestry). Using a multidisciplinary approach, we seek to improve lives and to protect and restore ecosystems. Our work focuses on innovative research, partnering for impact, and engaging with stakeholders on policies and practices to benefit people and the planet. Founded in 1993 and 1978, CIFOR and ICRAF are members of CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food-secure future dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security, and improving natural resources.

Coordinating African Partners and Advancing Agroforestry Science

ICRAF serves as the co-leader from the African region, strengthening coordination among African partners. It leads the development of a comprehensive soil spectral library across the Living Labs using vis-NIR and MIR spectroscopy, offering a faster, science-driven alternative to traditional soil analysis. ICRAF also maps the agroforestry sector across selected regions, examining geographical, socioeconomic, and gender-related dynamics. As the driving force behind the Pan-African Agroforestry Hub, it promotes collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity building. Additionally, ICRAF supports the development of the AfroGrow App to boost community engagement and effective agroforestry management. Through these efforts, it ensures the integration of scientific innovation to enhance ecosystem resilience and sustainable land use across the African Union.
