International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology

Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) was established in 1970. Its mission is to alleviate poverty, ensure food security, and improve health in tropical regions by developing and promoting sustainable strategies for managing harmful and beneficial arthropods, while preserving natural resources through research and capacity building.

ICIPE’s vision is to pioneer global entomological science that strengthens the resilience and well-being of people and the environment in a changing world. This is achieved through innovative applied research, exploratory studies, impact assessment, and sustainable capacity building.

Integrating Insect Ecology into Agroforestry Systems

ICIPE’s role in the AfroGrow Consortium is to integrate insect ecology with agroforestry systems through advanced monitoring techniques. It uses eDNA metabarcoding to identify and assess insect biodiversity, focusing on both pests and pollinators, within agroforestry environments. This innovative method enhances the project’s ability to track ecological changes and evaluate the impact of agroforestry practices on biodiversity, supporting the development of effective pest management and conservation strategies.

Overall, ICIPE contributes to the development of ecological models and agroecological management practices that promote biodiversity, improve pest control, and support sustainable agriculture and food security in the region.
