Senegalese Institute of Agricultural Research

The Senegalese Institute of Agricultural Research (Institut Sénégalais de Recherches Agricoles – ISRA), established in 1974, conducts fundamental and applied research across crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries, and socio-economy, reflecting its broad agricultural scope. Its mission includes advancing scientific and technological research, supporting national development policies, transferring knowledge, and promoting the use of research outcomes across economic and social sectors. ISRA is also active in training through research. The institute operates across Senegal’s six eco-geographical zones and maintains a wide-reaching infrastructure of regional centers, laboratories, research and production units, and support points for extension and multi-site experimentation (PAPEM).

Driving Agricultural Innovation and Local Knowledge Integration

ISRA brings strong expertise in developing innovative agricultural technologies, plant and animal breeding, participatory research, and socio-economic analysis. Within AfroGrow, ISRA leads the creation of regional databases on plant species and animal breeds, drawing from both community knowledge and market demands. The institute also contributes to mapping agroforestry-related education in Africa, identifying suitable animal breeds for diverse regions, assessing how agroforestry impacts human well-being, and raising awareness to promote inclusive and sustainable agroforestry practices.
