HEIDELBERG PLANETARY HEALTH HUB

The Heidelberg Planetary Health Hub (Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg – UKHD) is a dynamic research environment and community dedicated to addressing three fundamental and interlinked planetary challenges through a health-focused lens: climate change, environmental degradation, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Human health is positioned within the context of healthy ecosystems and environments. Scientific inquiry and interdisciplinary research explore the mechanisms and connections between human health and the health of the Earth’s natural systems. The goal is to measure and predict health impacts while identifying opportunities and solutions that support sustainable societal transitions. The Hub aims to pioneer transformative interdisciplinary research at the intersection of climate change, health, society, ecology, environment, and technology. It seeks to understand and tackle the complex, interconnected challenges that affect both human and planetary health.

Linking Agroforestry and Human Health through Data Science

UKHD brings strong expertise in data science techniques, including advanced modeling, machine learning, and geo-informatics, to assess how agroforestry systems affect human well-being. In AfroGrow, it leads research on three key areas: micronutrient availability, agricultural work capacity, and infectious disease risk. By applying these tools to real-world conditions, UKHD helps predict how agroforestry practices influence health outcomes, supporting more resilient, inclusive, and evidence-based land management.
