Hawassa University (HWU) is one of Ethiopia’s ten designated research universities. HWU is committed to producing skilled, internationally competitive graduates and advancing social and economic development through innovation, rigorous research, and technology transfer.

Aspiring to become one of the top ten research universities in East Africa by 2030, HWU upholds the values of excellence, honesty, inclusiveness, academic freedom, accountability, collaboration, innovation, and internationalisation.

The university’s work is built on four core pillars: teaching and learning, research and technology transfer, operational excellence, and institutional capacity development. HWU comprises six colleges and one Technology Institute dedicated to achieving this mission.

Leading Agroforestry Research and Living Lab Development

Hawassa University, through its Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources, brings deep expertise in forestry, agroforestry, and natural resource management. Recognised as a center of excellence in Ethiopia, the college combines academic training with hands-on innovation, research, and technology transfer. In AfroGrow, HU leads the coordination of Living Lab activities and supports the creation of harmonised data collection frameworks. It plays a central role in guiding on-the-ground research and contributes to all project areas that rely on data from the Living Labs.
