Federal Institute of Technology Zurich – Soil Resources

The Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich – ETHZ), through its Department of Environmental Systems Science (USYS), hosts the Soil Resources group within the Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems (ITES). The group’s research focuses on environmental controls that shape soil development and biogeochemical cycles, particularly in understudied regions and areas heavily affected by global change. The team specialises in complex fieldwork in challenging environments, such as the Arctic, Tropics, and Alpine regions, integrating it with interdisciplinary experiments on plant-soil-microbe interactions. These efforts help explain how biogeochemical cycles function at the landscape scale over time. The group is driven by a mission to preserve global soil resources for future generations, raising awareness of their limitations, dynamics, and the essential services they provide.

Evaluating Environmental Impacts of Agroforestry

As an associated partner, ETHZ’s Soil Resources group leads the assessment of how agroforestry systems affect soil health, water resources, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. Through multi-season field trials, pot experiments, and laboratory work, ETHZ investigates plant and crop responses to agroforestry management practices. Depth-explicit soil sampling using the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) supports the analysis of key soil parameters across the Living Labs.
