Fundació Centre de Recerca en Agrotecnologia

Agrotecnio is an international research centre of excellence in the agrifood field that is part of the Research Centres of Catalonia (CERCA) system. Established in 2014, its objective is to promote, develop, transfer, manage and disseminate high-impact research in agrifood. Agrotecnio’s research activity is based on agronomic and environmental sciences, animal science, food science and technology, and integrates other disciplines, such as law. The center adopts a comprehensive perspective that advocates for the One Health approach, recognizing the interconnection between human, animal, plant and environmental health. Agrotecnio focuses its research on sustainable intensification, efficient transformation, health and nutrition.

The center addresses key elements of the food production chain in an integrated way, from seed to table, developing cutting-edge fundamental research with a translational vocation, which seeks to transfer the new knowledge generated to the whole society.

Agrotecnio, Excellence in Agriculture and Food Research

Agrotecnio brings expertise in tree-based restoration, agroforestry, and sustainable land management, with a focus on the links between trees and the water cycle. Within AfroGrow, Agrotecnio leads assessments of the impacts of different agroforestry practices on water dynamics across diverse landscapes. By exploring the role of trees in regulating the water cycle and, in particular, soil hydrological functioning, Agrotecnio helps ensure that agroforestry strategies contribute to improved water security and long-term environmental resilience. The team also supports the development of species databases to guide the selection of plants and trees best suited to local conditions.
